A street-style blog with a difference.
Street style blogs are a dime a dozen these days and rarely seem to offer up anything new to the fashion world. Paving the way for a handful of new street style bloggers is Backyard Bill. This creative photographer captures much more than his subject’s clothes.
In June 2008 Bill started photographing friends and people that he would meet near his home in Brooklyn, New York. “I wanted to record interesting people, show their style, and check out what trends were developing,” he says on his blog. “I wanted to capture the ways in which people adapt to the cultural influences around them.”
Initially Bill set up the shoots and interviews at his home, specifically in his backyard, giving the quirky name to his popular blog. But Bill expanded beyond his New York backyard and started photographing people in their own unique space and surroundings. This, he says, enabled him to expand and get more in-depth with each of his subjects. “In this project I found the perfect marriage between my passions for image-making and for celebrating individuality,” he explains. “I ask each person a series of questions – where they’re from, where they’re going, and what they’re into.”
The result of Bill’s project is a series of intimate portraits of inherently stylish people in places that reflect their personalities. It’s a massive divergence from the usual nameless models strutting down busy streets in popular cities.
Bill says that no matter whether he is close to home or traveling the world, he never tires of seeking out interesting people. It’s why you’ll find people from across the globe featured on Backyard Bill.
